If You Know What Is Good…

When we compare ourselves with others (right or wrong), we often evaluate goodness based upon what we are “not doing” that the other person is. We determine our level of righteousness or holiness regularly based upon the negative commands of Scripture (think the Ten Commandments). James calls us though to expand our minds and consider what God has called us to do and what disobedience to that means. Thanks for joining us today as we explore that in James 4:17.…

How Might God Use This?

Thanks for joining us today as we continue to build upon the content from Sunday’s sermon by revisiting the main idea, exploring unanswered questions, and expanding more in depth into segments of the message. Good Father with Good Wisdom (GPS #3)

Continuing on the theme of fatherhood that Pastor Paul hit on Sunday, let’s journey back to the book of James today and see its correlation to the book of Proverbs as we talk about God being a good Father who gives good wisdom. “Our Father…” – 1 Jn 3:1

The Word of God as Our Guide…Even on Prayer (Jas 5)

Sadly many have been deceived and given misinformation about the subject of prayer. It has left people with false hope. The same could be said of many other things in life including relationships, the keys to happiness, purpose and fulfillment in life. Through this segment today, may you be encouraged to let Scripture be your guide in all matters of life, searching it and finding what it has to say. Thanks for watching! “Let’s Pray” (Jas 5:13-18)

Learning from Others on Suffering

James encourages us from ch. 5 to look to the examples of the prophets and Job as we encounter suffering in life. Their testimony is meant to encourage us, particularly in being patient, having endurance, and God’s purpose and care. The Scriptures isn’t just a random collection of writings. There is purpose, even instructing us in how to endure suffering. I’d like to encourage you not only with this text, but with the lessons and example Paul Tripp learned through…

Contentment Surgery (Jas 5)

James, while addressing the issue of oppression by the rich, hints at a character quality we must develop for our lives–contentment. This subject applies not just to finances but to many areas of life. But in order to come to that place, we need some spiritual surgery. What’s the deeper issue? Thanks for watching. Radical Disciple or Rationalizing Follower? (Jas 5)

James 5 confronts the financial oppression that was occurring in the writer’s day. Underlying the content of the passage though is this call to radical discipleship–to not adopt the norms of our culture, but rather follow after Jesus wholeheartedly. However, we may be guilty more times than not of being a rationalizing follower instead of a radical disciple. We find ways to explain away what Jesus calls us to and instead continue on in what we are content and comfortable…

Depending on God

James confronts those living in complete independence of God at the end of chapter 4. If that is what living independently of God looks like, what is characteristic of a life dependent on God? Thanks for watching as we explore that question today!

Understanding Prayer – Jas 4

In place of a vlog that I would put together, I encourage you to watch these helpful thoughts on prayer from James 4. These pastors not only expound on the text but encourage us to think deeper on this subject. May you be challenged and encouraged by this today!

WHERE’S THE BEEF? – FORGIVENESS (JAS 2:14-26)

Where’s the beef? It’s from the old Wendy’s commercial. James essentially asks that question as he talks about faith and works. He isn’t speaking about salvation but evidence of our faith in Christ. One of the crucial aspects of this subject regards relationships and within that forgiveness. Forgiveness is evidence of our abiding in Christ and submission to the Spirit’s work in our lives. FAVORITISM & PREJUDICE (JAMES 2)

The issue of racism is connected to a deeper issue of prejudice which has plagued humanity for thousands of years. Prejudice has not been shown to just one group of people as we commonly think of in our U.S. context. Through the centuries various groups have been show prejudice like the Jews and the Roma people. Amidst all the solutions offered by society, none seems to truly solve the issue. What can be done? What real solutions are there? That’s…

Speak & Act (Jas 2:12)

Due to time, I was unable to finish my portion of text from James 2 on Sunday. See the link below for that sermon. Today, let’s look at James 2:12. James talks about the subject of judgment which has a bad flavor in the mouth of many people today but an irrefutable doctrine on the Bible. What is so important about it for our lives as Christians? Thanks for watching. “The Plague of Partiality” (Jas 2:1-13)

RIGHTEOUS ANGER (PART 2)

Both the Apostle Paul and James warn us about anger. Their commands and exhortations join a host of others we find in Scripture. These lumped together remind us of the dangers of anger as it is exhibited by sinful flesh. It has destroyed families and friends, even nations. Yet, Paul and James both appear to leave room for righteous anger. Because we are prone to just the opposite, we must clearly understand what it is and what it looks like.…

THE BENEFIT OF THE LAW AS DOERS OF THE WORD

Sunday we talked about being “doers of the Word”. And as we think about obedience to the Word, that obedience is not directed solely toward what we find in the New Testament. There are many commands and principles that the New Testament highlights and confirms from the Old Testament. So the Law has value even for us today because it reveals to us who God is. Despite the thoughts that the Word is archaic or for a different time, a…

GOD DOES NOT CHANGE. AND THAT’S IMPORTANT. (JAMES 1:17)

James 1:17 is one of my favorite verses because it highlights an essential doctrine of the character of God. As I think on this, I am finding more and more examples all the time of how the secular world and even those within the Christian community are attempting to erode this crucial doctrine. What is it? And why is it important? We’re exploring that today!

DEALING WITH TEMPTATION. AVOIDING SIN.

We all struggle with various temptations and wonder if there is a way to avoid sin. Today we are looking at some practical tips and passages of Scripture that focus on just that. And in addition to all of that, we’ll explore the key issue concerning why we often succumb to temptation sin as well as what to do about it. Thanks for watching!

WHAT IS MORE VALUABLE THAN DIAMONDS? (JAMES 1)

Diamonds are among the world’s most valuable treasures that men seek after. But something is of greater value still. Wisdom. But not just any wisdom, specifically wisdom from God. We’re continuing our study of James 1:5-8 from Sunday looking at the difference between faith, doubt, and unbelief which James brings up in the passage. All of this is key to the overall understanding that calls us to seek the wisdom of God to understand how we can have joy in…
