If You Know What Is Good…

When we compare ourselves with others (right or wrong), we often evaluate goodness based upon what we are “not doing” that the other person is. We determine our level of righteousness or holiness regularly based upon the negative commands of Scripture (think the Ten Commandments). James calls us though to expand our minds and consider what God has called us to do and what disobedience to that means. Thanks for joining us today as we explore that in James 4:17.…

God’s Restraints on Evil: Conscience & Family

As we finished up Romans 1, one of the questions we are left asking is whether or not God restrains evil at all in this world. If the world is as bad as Paul says it is, how do we account for the “good” we do see in the world? Today, we’ll discuss 2 of 4 different restraints God has placed in the world and the responsibility these elements call us to. Thanks for watching! “Mayday, Mayday! We’re Going Down!”…

Dual Citizenship (GPS Vlog #2)

Christians have a unique identity. Not only are we citizens of our respective countries of origin (or more generally citizens of earth), but we are also citizens of heaven. I find that when it comes to hot topics as we are discussing in our new sermon series that we tend to side with the earthly rather than heavenly citizenship. Today, we’re diving into this subject of dual citizenship and what it means for us in our interactions with others and…

WHERE’S THE BEEF? – FORGIVENESS (JAS 2:14-26)

Where’s the beef? It’s from the old Wendy’s commercial. James essentially asks that question as he talks about faith and works. He isn’t speaking about salvation but evidence of our faith in Christ. One of the crucial aspects of this subject regards relationships and within that forgiveness. Forgiveness is evidence of our abiding in Christ and submission to the Spirit’s work in our lives. FAVORITISM & PREJUDICE (JAMES 2)

The issue of racism is connected to a deeper issue of prejudice which has plagued humanity for thousands of years. Prejudice has not been shown to just one group of people as we commonly think of in our U.S. context. Through the centuries various groups have been show prejudice like the Jews and the Roma people. Amidst all the solutions offered by society, none seems to truly solve the issue. What can be done? What real solutions are there? That’s…

RIGHTEOUS ANGER (PART 2)

Both the Apostle Paul and James warn us about anger. Their commands and exhortations join a host of others we find in Scripture. These lumped together remind us of the dangers of anger as it is exhibited by sinful flesh. It has destroyed families and friends, even nations. Yet, Paul and James both appear to leave room for righteous anger. Because we are prone to just the opposite, we must clearly understand what it is and what it looks like.…

TRAINING BECAUSE OTHERS DEPEND ON IT

In the military, training is not only to defeat an enemy or help you personally in a situation, but also to help your fellow soldiers. In the church, our gathering times are in a sense a training grounds. We often approach those gathers with a mindset of what’s in it for me personally. Based on 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and what we’re going through in Ephesians, I’d encourage you that our times are training so that we might be equipped to…

WHO’S IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT?

The word “Lord” is an important one for our daily Christian walk to remember. It reminds us that we are under the authority of Christ and called to walk in his will. Yet if we’re honest, we often just happy with him being our Savior rather than our Lord. Lord implies that I must submit to his control in my life. As unpleasant as our world makes that sound and deceived us into believe it is, it is in submission…

WHAT IS UNITY – EPHESIANS 4 (#ASKPD)

In a world that seems disunified more than ever, the subject of unity keeps coming up in the church and the reminder to strive for it. Could we define it though if we were asked to or tell others what it looked like? I’m grateful that God in Ephesians 4 gives us a picture of what it looks like and describes it for us. Take a moment to read the chapter and then watch. Ephesians 4 NET

SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIPS (EPHESIANS 5)

Ephesians 5 is all about relationships. Paul gives important instructions for marriage relationships and that discussion continues into chapter 6 on family and work relationships as well. As we purpose to implement these instructions in our lives through the power of the Spirit and letting him do his work in us, we set up our relationships to be successful. Take some time today to read the passage and reflect on your own relationship. How might you further implement these instructions.…

CONFIDENT PRAYER TO GOD (EPHESIANS 3)

Ephesians 3 contains a well known doxology of the Apostle Paul. As well known as these words are, they express the confidence Paul has in God as he reflects on what God has done in the church and asks God to do specific things within the Ephesian church.
